A woman dressed as a super-hero. She has blue hair and is wearing a home-made blue outfit, with gloves, knee high boots and a cape. She is standing in front of a blue wall with rusting rivets. There is a window made from different scrap metal

Issue 1: Brave

What does it mean to be brave when the world expects you to be grateful just for existing? Here courage is not measured by grand gestures, but by the daily act of taking up space, of simply getting out of bed.

This issue celebrates the quiet heroism involved in advocating for yourself during medical appointments. Throughout history, writing has always been a radical act. We want you to be authentically, and unapologetically, yourself. This issue is vulnerable and courageous. Share your stories from bravery. From love poetry to epic fantasy worlds, from everyday moments of revelation to bold explorations of identity and place. It’s time to take up space.

Your work does not have to be about your disability status. This is a space for you to be yourself. Write what you want to write.

SUBMISSION guidelines

We publish a biannual journal featuring experimental work by disabled writers and carers. We welcome submissions from self-identifying disabled, chronically ill, neurodivergent, and mad creators.

Who Can Submit

  • Writers who identify as disabled, chronically ill, neurodivergent or as carers (formal or informal)

  • No need to disclose diagnoses — we trust you to self-identify

  • You live in Australia

What We’re Looking For

  • Poetry, prose, hybrid, or visual-textual work

  • Up to 2 poems up to 200 lines, 2 prose pieces up to 5,000 words, or a hybrid/visual submission.

  • We don’t care about formatting — experimental work can take any shape. If the work lives best in an unusual format, that’s not a problem — that’s a strength. If you're unsure, just get in touch and we’ll figure out how to make it work.

  • Your work does not have to be about your disabillity status

Reading Periods

  • We accept work all year around as we know deadlines can be challenging.

  • We generally finalise our winter edition by April 30 and our summer edition by October 31

  • We will send reminders out 1 month before the deadline for the issue closes

We aim to respond within 6 weeks of receiving your work. If there’s a delay, we’ll communicate transparently. We are a small team of disabled writers so sometimes things take time.

This journal is by and for those who live in the margins — we’re building something slow, careful, and radically accessible. We can't wait to read your work.

payment

We believe in paying contributors for their work. While we are currently waiting for funding, we’re able to offer a $20 honorarium and a 1-year membership to all accepted contributors.

We know this isn’t a living wage, but it’s important to us to offer something tangible while we build toward more sustainable, better-funded publishing. We’ll always be transparent about what we can offer — and our goal is to increase payment as soon as possible. Want to help us get there? Donate today.

Our submissions are open all year round.
